About Artisan Plastering
Artisan Plastering is a specialist lime plastering business based in Ashington, Northumberland, founded on a straightforward belief — that old buildings deserve materials and craftsmen that understand them.
We work on historic, listed, and traditional properties across Northumberland and the North East, carrying out heritage lime plastering, hemp and cork insulated lime systems, lime plaster on wood wool boards, and traditional lath and lime plasterwork. Every project is treated individually. The building always comes first.
How we got here
Artisan Plastering began as a general plastering business covering all aspects of the trade — internal and external plastering, gypsum systems, render finishes, and everything in between. Over time, and particularly through an increasing volume of sub-contract work with the National Trust on historic properties across Northumberland, our focus shifted toward lime and heritage work.
That background matters. Understanding how gypsum and cement behave — and why they fail on old buildings — is exactly what makes a good lime plasterer. We didn’t arrive at lime plastering through a course. We arrived through years of practical experience and the privilege of working on some of the most demanding and rewarding buildings in the region.
Experience & Qualifications
As a time-served plasterer with advanced City & Guilds qualifications and years of experience working on some of Northumberland’s most important historic buildings, we understand the demands of conservation-grade lime work. We are a trusted sub-contractor to the National Trust, carrying out restoration and conservation lime plasterwork on historic properties across the region.
We are also an approved contractor for cork insulated lime plastering systems — one of very few in the UK — bringing genuinely modern breathable insulation solutions to buildings that cannot tolerate conventional insulation methods.
How we work
We work alongside conservation architects, heritage surveyors, and historic building consultants, as well as directly with private owners of listed and unlisted traditional properties. We are happy to visit site, assess what a building needs, and recommend the right approach before any work begins.
Every material we use is chosen to be sympathetic to the building. Every method we apply respects its age, construction, and character.
